The Chronosorter stands as a testament to the relentless ingenuity and determination of the Court of Savantae, a group of researchers who ventured into the mysteries surrounding Mt. Firmament and its peculiar flow of time. This device was created to mimic the temporal abilities of the Sentinel Jué, whose power to control and manipulate time had become both a beacon and an enigma for these scholars. The Chronosorter could reverse localized events and restore objects to a previous state, an ability that seemed miraculous at first glance. Yet, for all its ingenuity, it was far from perfect.
The first Chronosorter was born out of desperation. The Sentinel, once capable of halting, rewinding, and correcting time, had sustained devastating injuries during its descent upon Mt. Firmament. One of its Temporal Programs was lost, and with it, the ability to restore time to its original flow. Instead, the Sentinel was left only with the power to halt or rewind time, an incomplete and fragile state that worsened with each passing moment. The Court of Savantae sought a solution, a way to replicate the Sentinel’s immense abilities and prevent the temporal disruptions threatening to spiral out of control and engulf all of Jinzhou. Their answer lay in Resonance—the fundamental connection between the Sentinel and its surroundings.
Chronosorters, as artificial Resonance Objects, were designed to harness this connection. When struck with a strong impact, they resonated with the Sentinel, creating localized time-rewinding effects. However, the limitations soon became clear. A Chronosorter could only function within the bounds of the Sentinel’s range or within the distorted temporal field of Mt. Firmament. Outside these confines, the devices shut down, rendering them useless. Moreover, their power paled in comparison to the vast and natural authority of the Sentinel. They could rewind time within a narrow scope but could not restore order on a larger scale. Despite countless experiments, the Court's hopes for a complete replication of the Sentinel’s power remained unfulfilled.
As the researchers delved deeper, they hypothesized a method to amplify the Chronosorters’ abilities. The concept of the Second Resonance Awakening emerged—a phenomenon that could occur when two resonating frequencies collided, potentially unlocking greater power. This idea aligned with prophecies of a destined clash between Jinhsi and the Sentinel, a confrontation believed to be necessary to trigger such an awakening in Jinhsi and grant her the ability to restore the flow of time. Despite their best efforts, however, the researchers failed to achieve the Second Awakening with Chronosorters. Machines overloaded and disintegrated under the strain of resonating with the Sentinel’s frequency. In one notable incident, a Chronosorter briefly demonstrated the ability to restore time before it succumbed to destruction, its success fleeting and incomplete.
Further insights from research logs revealed another layer of complexity. The Chronosorters operated in what was described as an overdrive mode, akin to the Overclocking experienced by human Resonators when they pushed their abilities to the limit. This overexertion led to their inevitable breakdown. One particular experiment hinted at a potential breakthrough when a “peculiar visitor” intervened. In the moment before a Chronosorter’s failure, this visitor issued a command to the Sentinel, prompting it to transfer energy to the device. This fleeting success suggested that the Sentinel’s involvement was key, though the exact mechanisms remained a mystery.
